I've photographed many children, but I can honestly say there has never been one quite as sweet as Nathaniel! I still am marveling at how easily he sat and smiled at me, effortlessly, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. I think nearly every frame featured his big, gorgeous grin! This is the story of two very sweet sisters that share the same birthday. This month sweet Charli turns one, and big sister Bella turns three!

But, this is quite a bigger story than that. I don't usually preview this many photographs from a session, but I feel so very strongly about these photos and about this story, that I'm going to go ahead and do it, just this once :).

It is not a new story....most people know there is something incredibly special about motherhood. It is absolutely the hardest job I've ever had. Giggles, laughs, cuddles and smiles are all most parents have to compensate for the daily struggle that oh so obstinate and head strong kids put up.

I look at the following series of photos and my heart swells. Maybe its because I'm emotional, maybe its because I love this mom and these kids so very much, or maybe its just because these are moments of simple, unabashed love and beauty. Chaos and joy - which is everything that motherhood is. These stolen moments get us through the times when the screaming doesn't stop, toddler is winning the battle, that we want to loose our cool, and we want to run away to Siberia....

Because of these photos, I encourage you all to get in front of the camera with your children!! Play, love and have fun :) What surprises me is that most parents are so apprehensive to get in front of the camera, and I implore (as a parent, not as a photographer!) you all to reconsider. Having moments like these, frozen in time, will be treasured memories for you and your children for years to come.

As much as I hate to admit it, more often than not I forget to make the time and capture special moments between my own kids :) Preserving these moments in time is such an important task!
When I do finally give them their own photoshoot, I'm always reminded how very grateful I am that I have this wonderful gift of photography to give to my family, and to others.

I absolutely love outdoor sessions, especially along Chicago's seemingly endless shoreline with big city skyline and beautiful sandy beaches! I don't, however, always love dealing with our ever changing weather :) This day, luck was on my side. Despite the crummy forcast the Woolfe family was up and ready to gamble, and I think we beat the odds! We had a mega fast family session and grabbed some great shots before the angry skies opened up (which they did...on the way to our vehicles!). What a great way to commemorate two big birthdays - Happy 3rd birthday to J and Happy 1st Birthday to M!

Jackson is such a sweet little guy! I absolutely adore his sweet baby blues. Don't let this little Southern boy outfit fool you :) He's less about frills, and more about cruising around and exploring every little bit around him! He's just over nine months old, and ready to start walking at ANY second. It was great chasing him around, and SO much fun to photograph him in his own surroundings. I love this crib shot - it reminds me of waking up and seeing my little guy standing up in his bed, so happy to see me :) Great idea, Mom!

This session was full of adventures :) First of all - Mom is a very special person in my life because she was our favorite nurse when Lola was born, so I was over the moon when she asked me to take portraits of her 1 and 2 year old children to commemorate their birthdays. I talked her into making it a whole family session, and Grandma and Grandpa even came along for the ride!

Our first location choice was swarmed with mosquitoes....I mean SWARMED! Luckily, they knew of another nearby municipal park, so cool, calm and collected we all packed back up and headed over to Plan B. What a beautiful Plan B it was!! Trees, baseball diamonds, and the occasional Metra train.....we ended up with a GREAT session! Thanks again for having me - it was a ton of fun - and SO hard to choose the few to preview here today :)

What a blessing! The family enjoyed the photographs from the First Birthday Celebration of this sweet girl, so they invited me back to see Aurelia turn two :) Mom did not disappoint this year, either! It was a horse themed gala at the Noble Horse Theatre. We all know EVERY little girl needs a pony!

Donna was so gracious to provide some of the wonderful people that helped her create this event - I've included links so you can see their work! Most of the items were found on Etsy....except for the tacos :) Those were made by her cousin Pillo :) Now, I have about a zillion photos I could have previewed from this event - everything was so spectacular! {Happy Spring!} : : Chicago Family Photographer

Its not often I actually get in front of the lens, but I'm making an effort to do self portraits. I took a few today (but I don't have them edited quite yet!). I actually had grand plans to take a family photo over our Easter trip to Michigan, but the kiddos weren't really feeling well and having a tough time with strange nap schedules....and when they were cooperating the weather wasn't - so we had to pass. I was upset, naturally - I had our wardrobe coordinated and everything! Pat tried to make me feel better, but it only worked with a promise that I could re-create a portrait at home....which I did. Its not outside....and I didn't have high expectations, but Liam and Lola were incredibly agreeable, and the photo actually turned out pretty darn nice!

So, Karin O'Brien Photography Fans - Happy Spring from the O'Brien Family! Here's to many warm days ahead :)

A lot of amazing changes are in store for Karin O'Brien Photography in 2010! One of the most exciting is the introduction of the Baby Mine program (details to come soon), which allows me to document and tell the story of your sweet baby, from pregnancy to age one.

As soon as it was introduced, Amy Jo jumped at such a great opportunity. I am so excited to document Baby Walker #2's first year of life, starting with this incredible belly :) There are so many things about my job that I love - especially being around families expecting a new baby. The air is always filled with such an incredible energy. Positive emotions are in the air - Excitement. Anticipation. Hope. And lots (and LOTS) of love!

Kelly's parents held a beautiful cocktail reception in celebration of Kelly & Tim's nuptials back in October. The weather is a changing my friends :) People often overlook the beauty of outdoor portraits even after the leaves have long gone. Lucky for me, Leyton and his parents were up for the beach even with a cool November breeze! Most of the time when I'm at a photo shoot, I have a pretty good idea of the shots I've taken and the good ones I'm going to look for when I start editing. But every once in a while I'm surprised :) Capturing little moments like this - seeing the interaction between parent and child, a small glance and subtle smile, simply being able to see the love. *sigh* it makes my heart melt! This is why I am a photographer - I love preserving these moments and these memories!

About a year ago I started this business and website. I gave away a gift certificate to encourage people to sign up for my email list, and Holly was the lucky winner! We decided to not only do family photos, but also incorporate my very first maternity session as well. I have to say, we had a LOT of fun, and it was so wonderful to be so very close to that beautiful belly!! Thank you to Jesse, Owen and Nana Beth who all came along for the session :) I love the images we captured!

These extra two are just some of the most hilarious ones I've encountered on a shoot. Owen apparently is working on his stand up skills, because he tells the most hilarious jokes.....like "Tomato!" or "Bunny Rabbit!". Its cute just hearing what he says, but even more adorable is his body language - just like a little comic! Check him out in action here!

Here, I was doing a couple very nice shots of just Holly and Jesse while Owen was off playing....and all the sudden he decided he wanted to be in the pic too! So he sauntered over and joined us :)

You might remember Jack's beautiful sister Lila from a few posts back :) He is such a sweet big brother! Jack was supposed to join us that day for his two year old photographs (he turned two the day after Lola was born in October), but he wasn't feeling very well, so this is Part Deaux of their photoshoot. Even though he wasn't the smiley-est of campers today, we got some great shots. He really was a joy to shoot and has SO much personality! Thanks again for bringing him over Katie :)

Hello Cyber Space!

The newest O'Brien addition, Lola, was born on October 2, 2009! She's a beautiful baby girl, and big brother Liam is genuinely enjoying her company :) Here are a few photos I snapped in the hospital (and one of me, snapped by my darling sister!).

Its been just over 6 weeks since we've welcomed Lola home, and I've got the green light from my doctor to jump back in the saddle and start taking photos again! I'm ready and raring to go :) Book your session for 2009, because 2010 is bringing big changes to Karin O'Brien Photography!

I take many different kinds of portraits, but to me there is something particularly special about Senior Portraits. I can never seem to exactly put my finger on it; maybe its the documentation of a young person officially coming of age, the promise of a bright new tomorrow, or maybe even a bit of wistfulness on my part when I see all the beauty and fun of their youth. I suppose it is a little of all of that. Its beautiful, isn't it?

In any case, I had the privilege of photographing a beautiful young woman for her Senior Session in Downtown Chicago and we had a fabulous shoot :) There were sooo many great shots to choose from, it was so very difficult to decide which ones to process right away. Can you believe that amazing hair and those gorgeous eyes!?? To DIE for! Enjoy!

Don't worry - everything is PG here on this blog :) I had the extreme pleasure of getting in touch with Allison to be the official photographer of her sister Elizabeth's bachelorette party. What an incredibly fun evening it was! Four hours of good friends and family on a Chicago Trolley fully stocked with adult beverages, AMAZING weather, scooting around the streets of our great city. We stopped at important Chicago landmarks, as well as a few sentimental spots that hold a lot of memories for the bride and groom. This is a Mega Sneak Peek - as, once again, I had a hard time narrowing down which ones to show!

I have a treat for you all today :) I just couldn't decide which ones to show, so a super sized sneak peek it is! Featuring not only an adorable little girl (Miss Bella is almost TWO years old) but also her fuzzy little pal. Well, Luke isn't so little (170 pounds! EGADS!) but he certainly is sweet and fuzzy. It was a warm and humid day, and I had a fabulous time following these two around and soaking up the cuteness. Enjoy!

What an AMAZING afternoon we had on Sunday to take family portraits. I traveled to the north western 'burbs to hang out with a pretty darn cool family that hadn't taken a family portrait in 10 years! YOWZA! Eight adults and six kids: and every single one of them were cooperative and beautiful - makes my job pretty easy. Thank you, Lipinsky clan, for letting me spend that lovely time with you!

My very first outdoor engagement session :) I could not have asked for an easier couple to work with - and we had an AMAZING day! Perfect temperature, blue skies and nothing but love between these two. It really was a fantastic way to spend a morning. The skyline was amazing...and was an integral part in this shoot. These portraits will be used for their save the date cards, which will be sent to Liam's family in Ireland and Trese's family in Arizona. Best of luck on your cross country wedding plans!!!

I had a glimpse into the future while photographing little man Andrew and his new baby brother, Peter. GASP! I can't quite imagine wrangling two kids just yet. Most of my worries melted away though when I saw just how incredibly sweet it was when the two of them interacted. It was so heartwarming! The photos of these two boys are a Father's Day surprise for their Dad (SHHH! don't spoil it!), I know he's going to love them :) Thanks, Mom, for the opportunity to capture these two on film!!

{Aurelia's First Birthday!}

One of my FAVORITE things to photograph is a baby's first birthday party! It is such a fun celebration, and so much love and work goes into creating a great event to share with friends and family. This weekend I was able to do just that for little Miss Aurelia! We had an absolutely gorgeous day, topped off with beautiful decorations, delicious food, and fantastic company. Thank you so much to Mom & Dad for inviting me over to capture an amazing milestone for a sweet little girl :) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Lincoln is the resident Stud Muffin of our Thursday Playgroup :) He's always stylin', has the sweetest hair, and in general is an adorable little man. The first time I met him he was wearing skull and crossbones shoes, which I thought was AWESOME! Big thanks to Mom & Dad for sneakin' in some family shots at the end (even when he was a little sleepy) - happy 18 months of life Lincoln!

I met David & Lindsey through my cousin a few years back - I think I was pregnant with Liam at the time - and they are certainly some pretty cool peeps. I was over the moon when Lindsey contacted me to take some family photos along with portraits of sweet One Year Old Grace. It was a fabulous afternoon in Millennium Park (or at least it was for the hour we were there!), and we had some great conversation along with a pretty nice stroll. Thanks again for the great afternoon!

{Retro Pin Up - Females in Focus}

The photography group "Females in Focus" is so many different things for me - not just a way to get out and shoot more. It stretches my creative boundaries, gives me an opportunity to photograph subjects that I may normally not have on a regular basis, and most importantly, gives me an opportunity to befriend some amazingly creative women and learn from them in the process! This particular shoot I learned more about studio lighting and set up...which is something I will forever need work with! AND, I got to utilize a REAL studio :) It was so much fun! Thanks to Gina & Karen again for organizing, and to our models Carolyn, Sunny & Beca!

Although Spring is so close to springing here in Chicagoland, it is still a bit too drab to shoot outside. Thankfully, little Miss Lily brought all the Spring, flowers and sunshine we needed inside with her big smile and cute little dress! Lily is one year old, and every bit a sweet little girl. Thanks to Mom & Dad for inviting me in their home to capture her on film, and for popping in for a few photos, too.

More one year old madness! Bobby is such a sweet little man, with a dimple & baby blues that will melt anyone into a big, pile of goo. Seriously. He was full of smiles and laughs and loved dancing around to the music :) Definitely made for a fun morning for me! Happy Birthday Bobby!!

Sugar and spice and everything nice - that's what Audrey is made of :) This little girl was so sweet and SUCH a trooper, despite a crazy morning! You'd never know it by these photos, but she was a teensy bit afraid of the camera (who wouldn't be afraid of a big black box being shoved in your face!?!) but once she warmed up she was ready to ham it up! And, she so loved her two lovies, Miss Carrots and Stinky Bear :) Ahhh - I adore kiddos and their lovies!!! I also enjoy getting my fill of frills and flowers and pink...because its cars and boy stuff most of the time in our household. Here's Audrey!

Brrrr....what a chilly and craptastic day :( I can't wait for this weather to break so I can do more photographing outside. The next best thing to shooting outdoors, though, is shooting in the Garfield Park Conservatory! I had the privilege of photographing the Wonderful Mr. Wil and his Fabulous Parents this weekend. Happy One Year Birthday to a very sweet friend, Madeline! She's such a little doll, and the happiest baby around....until the dreaded teeth start coming in (cue menacing music. Dum dum duuuuummmmmm). Sometimes toddlers are cooperative....most times they are not, especially when we have big plans! As was the case for Liam's first photo shoot. I wasn't pleased with the results. So, a few days later I tried again and succeeded! The sugar laden lollipop probably helped my chances :)

Ahhhh - how sweet it is to turn ONE!! Michael celebrated his big birthday last week, and I was so excited to be able to take photos to mark this milestone. He was a little less than happy with me and my camera (I, too, hope he's not getting sick Amy!), but he was more than willing to flash all sorts of smiles for Mom & Dad. Thanks to both of you for all your help! And for letting me snap a few of the whole family - what a beautiful family you are!

After the background was taken down and my gear was put away, I followed little man around while he was playing with his toys just to catch a couple more casual shots of him. I could not get enough of those big blue eyes! Here is one of those shots.....

Side note: It is amazing to make how much difference a few months make when you're talking in Toddler Time....my little man is just a few months older than Michael, but I feel like so much time has passed since his birthday. Makes me a little wistful!!

This group is for women to get together, talk about the industry, grow our business, and most of all - help support and empower each other. A fabulous creative resource if you ask me! Our gathering for the month of January was at the beautiful Garfield Park Conservatory, and featured the musings of Indian saris and headdress on our beautiful models Carolyn, Janessa and Eva. I have the pleasure of living in quite possibly THE coolest Courtyard Building in Chicago. It is pretty pet friendly, and some very cool pupsters co-habitate with their human families. Two such hip city dogs: the fabulous Cooper & Mr. Magoo. Not only are they adorable (really, what Westies aren't?), they are incredibly sweet and cuddly too! They regularly give Liam & I lots of sniffs and kissies when we see them in the courtyard. A big Thank You to their mommies for having me over to capture them on camera today!

Some shots from our casual session this morning. For me, these photos exemplify why is a great reason to bring your child's favorite toy to a photo shoot. Liam LOVES playing with these Tonka Trucks & Trains right now. He always seems to have two with him at all times, one in each hand. Double fisted, if you will :). Sometimes its the train and caboose, sometimes its the concrete truck and the firetruck. He drives them up and down the couches, up and down our heads and arms, on the cats' back and head. He'll lay on his belly and drive them around, sit on his heels (just like in the 4th and 5th photo) and drive them around. They are definitely his favorite toy right now.

The photos aren't all of him smiling lovingly directly at the camera. But, I feel like I captured perfectly this moment in his life. These tiny details that I may or may not remember when he's 18 and the top of his pants are no longer rolled over and the tag does not stick out. That is what its all about :)

Thank God for little boys! Matthew was my subject this morning, and I couldn't have asked for a more sweet little guy. And quiet the photogenic little gentleman, too. His eyes alone just BEG for the camera! It was a ton of fun chasing him around with the camera while mom and auntie danced and played for his smiles :)

I was so very excited to photograph my second event for the organization Chicago Cares. This one was even more fun than the first! I was hired to photograph various classes at Saturday morning academy on Chicago's West Side. The kids learned about "World Food & Culture" with a Kwanza celebration, learned writing skills in "Write it Out", and also had art projects as well as computer skills. It was quite a work out running up and down stairs between classes :) And, how cool was it that I ran into my downstairs neighbor who was a volunteer for this event - what a nice surprise!

I had the pleasure of photographing a "Well Wishing - Good Luck" party for a very cool dude yesterday night. Phil Doran was the Man of the Hour, and as you can see below......he is VERY well loved by his co-workers, friends and family :) He's the dashing man in the Cubbies Jersey. Here are a few highlights from the evening.

The Arnold Family has a great tradition of hitting up Winter Wonderfest at Navy Pier every Christmas season - what a perfect place for Holiday family portraits! There were lots and lots of people around, but we were able to dodge the crowds a bit and capture some great, festive family moments.

Today was a great little photoshoot! Even though it was chilly outside, it was nice and toasty warm in the Garfield Park Conservatory. The Momfia is an amazing group of women who were lucky enough to find each other through a regular Tuesday playgroup on Chicago's North Side. We were all playing in the Children's Garden, and I was able to steal each kiddo away for a quick shoot in the Holiday Show Room. Zillions of poinsettias and lights galore! Merry Christmas indeed :)
